To the Point

Should I just do what comes naturally to me? Is that what God wants me to do?

Some basic truths help answer this question.

God is the Father of your spirit. He didn’t “create” you out of nothing. You were begotten with a divine nature—the potential to become like Him. You were “also in the beginning with God. Intelligence, or the light of truth, was not created or made, neither indeed can be” (Doctrine and Covenants 93:29). Before this life, you also had agency, and you made choices.

Your physical body is a gift from God and is necessary to experience mortal life and become more like Him. Because of the Fall, every person experiences weakness, including some “natural” tendencies at odds with God’s commandments (see Mosiah 3:19). But we should seek to “bridle all [our] passions” (Alma 38:12), humble ourselves, try to obey God, repent when we don’t, and seek strength and help through Jesus Christ and His Atonement. We experience weakness in this life so that we will be humble and turn to God (see Ether 12:27).

During this life, your use of agency is key. Choose God and His ways. Choose to progress. Choose joy.
