An Errand of Angels
On Saturday 14 September, Relief Society sisters and Young Women of the Leeds Stake met for an afternoon of giving as they participated in a variety of service opportunities intended to bless the lives of others in the community. Much was accomplished. Forty-four shoeboxes were filled with personal items, sweets, and other items, were donated complete, or filled and wrapped on the day, and then sent to help families and elderly in Eastern Europe under the ‘Link to Hope’ shoebox appeal.
Ten fleece blankets were cut and tied for Project Linus, a charity which brings comfort to babies, children and teenagers through newly made blankets.
One hundred and sixty-eight syringe driver bags were completed throughout the stake, some on the day and others as a result of a continuing service project, in association with the Robert Ogden Macmillan Cancer Centre at St James’ hospital in Leeds, for patients receiving palliative care or undergoing chemotherapy.
Other sisters visited a local care home to sing popular songs, a joyful experience for the residents who happily sang along with the sisters.
Some sisters wrote Christmas messages of hope, kindness and testimony to missionaries serving from the Leeds Stake, whilst others wrote ‘postcards of kindness’ to residents living in local care homes to help dementia sufferers and reduce loneliness.
Some sisters developed their CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) skills through first-aid training, so preparing them to potentially bless the lives of others; others discussed what they could learn from Ruth in the Old Testament about kindness, loyalty and ministering; others made kindness door hangers to gift to others to brighten their day.
Attending sisters were truly on an errand of angels that day, going away knowing that their efforts would bless the lives of vulnerable people in the community.
