How to Study Better and Get Smarter
Whether we are learning on the job, taking college courses, or recertifying our professional skills, developing effective study habits can save us a lot of time and money.
The best way to learn combines both study and experience. It’s effective to read books or to listen to a teacher, but we expand our learning when we put our knowledge to practical use. Whether we are studying for exams or working with a new technology, here are a few tips for learning more effectively.
Write notes, draw pictures. The act of writing reinforces the learning process. When you write down in your own words what you have learned about a topic, your mind engages with the material in a new way. The act of drawing is similar. Even if you aren’t a great artist, you can draw your own images or diagrams.
Watch a video on the topic. Video engages your senses of sight and hearing. After you have watched a video, describe what you learned from it to another person.
Set a routine. If possible, study at the same time every day. It’s vital that you create a quiet space where you can settle in and get to work. Turn off your phone or anything else that will interrupt your focus. When you take a break, go for a walk and change your surroundings.
Live the Word of Wisdom. Eating right, avoiding drinks with high sugar content, and getting enough sleep and exercise are good habits that promote health. When we follow the Word of Wisdom, our minds become open to new learning.
Teach what you have learned. Join a study group and take turns teaching the material to each other. If you are studying at home, teach the material to a friend or family member.
Last but not least, reward yourself. Consider the progress you’ve made, and remember to celebrate milestones. Do a happy dance or put a smiley face on your wall every time you master something. You’ll be surprised at how good it makes you feel.
