The high ground of bluff overlooks a valley bordering a bend in the Grand River. Latter-day Saint settlers named this entire area Spring Hill after the freshwater springs they found flowing from the bluff down into the river below. As Latter-day Saints contemplated settling the Spring Hill area in the summer of 1838, the Lord revealed to Joseph Smith that the place should be named Adam-ondi-Ahman (Doctrine and Covenants 116). The Lord had taught earlier that Adam gathered his posterity into a valley at Adam-ondi-Ahman to bestow on them his final blessing (Doctrine and Covenants 107:53). Latter-day Saints today consider both Spring Hill and the valley below it significant sacred places.
