Learn about the community that formed here in response to the revelation that the city would become a “city of Zion,” a gathering place, and a location for a future temple.
This site is a reconstruction of a jail where the Prophet Joseph Smith received divine revelations of comfort while imprisoned in March 1839. 
At this site, which served as the Church headquarters for a short time, the Saints began to build a temple in 1838. This monument honors the unfinished temple.
In 1838, 17 Latter-day Saints were killed by vigilantes at this frontier settlement. Today, it is a peaceful commemorative landscape.
Originally named Spring Hill, this short-lived Latter-day Saint settlement is a place of beauty and quiet contemplation.
