What to Expect at the Missouri Historic Sites

Families visit inside Liberty Jail in Liberty, Missouri.
If you are visiting the historic sites in Missouri for the first time, navigating the many things to do can be both exciting and daunting. We recommend that you begin your visit at either Liberty Jail or the Independence Visitors’ Center. There, you will receive a brief orientation about the early Church in Missouri and learn about the many experiences you can participate in. Missionaries are available to answer questions and provide suggestions for your visit.

After visiting Independence and Liberty, we recommend exploring some of the nearby sites in the area. These include the Independence Temple lot, the Gilbert and Whitney Store, and the Monument to the Eight Witnesses.

If you have a little more time, Far West, Hawn’s Mill, and Adam-ondi-Ahman are well worth the drive. You can also find other significant locations to visit in the area on the All Locations page.

The Missouri Historic Sites are quite spread out. There is no public transportation within the historic site, so we recommend driving to key locations and then getting out and walking.
