Tower Hill is part of the same high ground named Spring Hill by Latter-day Saint settlers. They took the name Tower Hill from a noticeable stack of rocks, which they supposed were the remains of a tower left behind by people living here in the past. (Joseph Smith Journal, March–September 1838)

In 1838, Joseph Smith and a party of Church leaders visited Lyman Wight’s home at the base of Tower Hill. From there they explored the surrounding areas of Daviess County and found it an ideal place for the Saints to settle. That summer, as the people began surveying the land for a city, the Lord revealed to Joseph Smith that the land should be called Adam-ondi-Ahman (Doctrine and Covenants 116).
