Here’s how to find out!

Fun fact: we are all related somehow! FamilySearch can help you see exactly how close you and your friends are. Here’s what to do:

  1. Make sure you and your friend have both downloaded the Family Tree app and signed in.
  2. Tap “More” in the bottom right corner.
  3. Select “Relatives Around Me.”

If you both do this, you should be able to see if you’re related to each other—and anyone else near you who has the app open! This is fun to do at church or other places where there’s a crowd of people with the app.

Scroll down if you want to learn more about how words used to describe these extended relationships!

Sneak Peek

Tomorrow we’ll show you how to find the name of an ancestor to take to the temple!

Here are some terms you might see that describe your connection. It’s kinda complicated, so don’t get discouraged!

  • You might see terms like “10th cousin.” That number refers to how many generations ago your common ancestor is. Your cousin shares your grandparents, right? Well, your 2nd cousin shares your great-grandparents. Your 3rd cousin shares your great-great-grandparents. And so on.
  • You might also see terms like “four times removed.” That number refers to how many generations are between you and the person. A cousin “zero times removed” would be the same generation as you. But if they are your cousin “once removed,” it means they are the child of your cousin.
