Gospel teachers focus on Jesus Christ—His example, His attributes, His mission—in everything they teach. Jesus Christ set the perfect example of teaching. The Sunday School helps volunteer teachers in each congregation to learn the principles of Christlike teaching.
The Sunday School program of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is for anyone turning 12 years old or older interested in studying the gospel of Jesus Christ and God’s word in the scriptures. You don’t have to be a member of the church to participate!
Sunday School classes take place at church every first and third Sunday, usually in the hour following our main worship services. There are classes for adults, and classes for youth turning 12 or older (often congregations split the youth classes into multiple age levels). Younger children also participate in gospel learning at church, but their classes fall under the Primary organization (learn more about Primary for children here).
All Sunday School and Primary classes learn from the same manual, Come, Follow Me. In addition to providing a structure for Sunday classes, the manual also includes activities, questions, videos, and reading materials that participants are encouraged to study more in-depth on their own or with their family during the week.

The topics for the lessons come from the Come, Follow Me manual—the same manual used by congregations around the world to study specific chapters of scripture together each week. If the year’s curriculum were on the New Testament, for example, the lesson for the week might be on Matthew 6–7 and what those chapters teach us about becoming better followers of Jesus Christ.
Sunday School teachers are members of the congregation who were asked by Church leadership to volunteer their time as teachers. They prayerfully study the lesson materials and assigned reading each week and come prepared to lead a discussion with guidance from the Holy Spirit. Most lessons are a combination of insights shared by the teacher, reading passages of scriptures aloud together, and back-and-forth discussions in which the teacher asks the class questions and members of the class share their own insights. If you don’t feel comfortable answering questions or reading aloud, you’re welcome to simply listen to others do so.
The Sunday School program helps facilitate the Church’s home-centered, Church supported approach to gospel learning. The Come, Follow Me manual that Sunday School teachers use to facilitate discussions during Sunday classes is also full of additional reading materials, video clips, questions, and activities that class members are encouraged to use to guide their personal and family scripture study.
Studying the gospel of Jesus Christ each day on your own and with family or friends can help you strengthen your faith and better understand God’s plan for you, strengthen your family, and find greater peace and happiness as you follow Jesus Christ.
