Overview
Among the Psalms, we find comparisons that help us understand the power of God’s word, and we find encouragement to express gratitude for the Lord, His blessings, and His eternal love.
Invite learners to prepare to learn. Spiritual preparation matters—for you and for the people you teach. When visiting the Americas, the Savior told the multitude, “Go ye unto your homes, and … prepare your minds for the morrow” (3 Nephi 17:3). Look for ways you can follow the Savior’s example and encourage your students to prepare to learn in seminary. To learn more about how the Savior did this, see “The Savior Invited Others to Prepare to Learn” (Teaching in the Savior’s Way [2022], 25). An example of preparing students to learn can be found in the student preparation for Lesson 107: “Psalm 119” (see below).
Prepare to teach
The following information provides you with ideas of what you may need to prepare in advance for each lesson.
Psalm 119
Lesson purpose: To help students make a plan to study the word of God.
Inviting learners to complete small assignments or activities before the next class can prepare them to learn more. These activities can give students opportunities to study scriptures, ponder gospel topics, and be taught by the Holy Ghost. The following student preparation is one example:
-
Student preparation: Invite students to personally study the scriptures before next class. Ask them to ponder if they feel the Lord’s guidance through their scripture study. If so, can they think of any examples?
For additional training on student preparation, see “Create invitations that help learners prepare for the next learning experience” in Teacher Development Skills.
-
Additional student preparation: You could also ask students to bring an object that would help finish the following statement: “Scriptures are like because .”
-
Items: A lamp or flashlight; a hymnbook; coins (or something representing riches); honey (or something sweet); a physical picture of a path; a physical picture of a counselor (for example, a counselor in the First Presidency of the Church or a school counselor)

Psalm 136
Lesson purpose: To help students feel Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ’s love as they express gratitude for Them.
-
Student preparation: Invite students to offer a prayer thanking Heavenly Father without asking for anything in return. Students could prepare to share their impressions from the experience with the class.
