Memorize References and Key Scripture Phrases

Remembering scripture passages and truths taught in them can help you in many ways. Throughout the year, you will be encouraged to memorize the scripture references and key scripture phrases for each of the 24 New Testament doctrinal mastery passages. This lesson is intended to help you memorize some of the scripture references and key scripture phrases from the first 11 doctrinal mastery scripture passages in the New Testament.

Student preparation: Invite students to bring copies of old Church magazines that they could cut up to make a visual for memorizing doctrinal mastery passages.

Possible Learning Activities

A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this review lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by the area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught while seminary is in session.

For this lesson’s activity, bring the following items to class: several copies of old printed Church magazines, a few pairs of scissors, glue, colored paper, markers, and crayons. Students may also use their own devices to search the Church’s media library for images or pictures.

Using visuals to help with memorization

Consider using an object lesson to help illustrate the benefits of using visuals to help with memorization.

One way to do this is to describe a scenario or to list a set of objects and then ask students to repeat back the details. Then use a visual, such as pictures or drawings, to describe a different scenario or to list a different set of objects, and ask students to repeat back those details. Ask students which of the two approaches made the details easier for them to remember.

Memorizing doctrinal mastery scripture passages can help you remember the Savior’s words and recall them in times of need. There are many different strategies you can use to help you memorize the scriptures. This lesson will focus on using visuals to help you solidify your memorization of certain key scripture phrases from the New Testament doctrinal mastery passages.

The following is a list of the first 11 New Testament doctrinal mastery scripture passages. Consider marking these passages along with their key scripture phrase if you have not yet done so.

Display the following handout so students can refer to it until they have finished making their visual during the next activity.

Creating a visual

Depending on the size of the class, the following activity can be done individually, in pairs, or in small groups. If possible, bring old copies of Church magazines to class for students to use. If printed pictures are not available, ask students to draw their own pictures on sheets of paper. Consider creating a visual together with the students. Invite students to share their visuals at the end of this activity.

Find or draw pictures that could help you remember the scripture reference and key scripture phrase from one of the first 11 New Testament doctrinal mastery scripture passages. Your creation could contain one or two pictures that help you remember an entire key scripture phrase, or it could contain different pictures for each word in the key scripture phrase. As you are working on your creation, think about how the passage you are focusing on relates to Jesus Christ and His gospel.

When students have finished, invite them to share their creation with others in the class.

If there is time, students could also prepare a brief lesson about the passage they chose that could be used in home evening or family scripture study. Invite the students to find a way to use the visual they created as part of their lesson. The following questions could guide students as they prepare their lessons:

• What does this scripture passage help us understand about Jesus Christ and His gospel?

• How can the truths from this scripture passage impact your life?

• What experiences have you had that relate to the truths taught in this scripture passage?

Consider encouraging students to practice memorizing the scripture references and key scripture phrases on their own. They might even consider choosing some entire passages to memorize.
