Understand and Apply

This lesson will help you review truths found in the doctrinal mastery scripture passages and will help you practice applying these truths in a variety of circumstances.

Engaging students in learning. Students who actively participate in the learning experience are more likely to remember what they learned. Invite students to participate in activities that include physical movement and interaction with people and objects around them.

Student preparation: If possible, give students a copy of the handout included in this lesson. Invite them to review the doctrinal mastery scripture references and key phrases. Also, ask them to think of situations in which the truths found in these doctrinal mastery passages could be helpful.

Possible Learning Activities

A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this review lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by the area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught while seminary is in session.

Review doctrinal mastery passages

Take some time to review the doctrinal mastery passages in the New Testament. Which ones do you know well? Which ones are you less familiar with?

  • What are some truths these passages teach that are especially meaningful to you?

If students would benefit from a review of the doctrinal mastery scripture references and key phrases, consider doing any or all of the following activities:

Note: During such activities, it can be helpful to invite students to work in pairs. Consider pairing students who need help with students who are willing and able to help them.

  1. Display the scripture references on one side of the board and the key phrases, listed randomly, on the other. Invite students to see how many references and key phrases they can match correctly. Invite them to use their scriptures to check their work.

  2. Show a portion of a key phrase, and invite students to complete it and to give the reference.

  3. Begin reading a key phrase slowly, one word at a time. When students think they know which doctrinal mastery passage is being referred to, they can open to that passage in their scriptures.

One way to remember truths in the scriptures is to relate them to everyday objects. Select two doctrinal mastery scripture passages, and review the key phrase associated with each. Then do the following with each of the passages:

Image

  • Draw or take a picture of an object that you feel relates to the key phrase in the passage. (For example, for Matthew 5:14–16, you could draw or take a picture of a light).

  • Write a brief explanation of how the object relates to the truth taught in the passage.

Connecting truths to our lives

Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught a truth that can help us apply doctrinal mastery passages. He taught that gospel principles “provid[e] the precious perspective of eternal truth as we navigate the different circumstances, challenges, decisions, and experiences of mortality” (“The Principles of My Gospel,”Liahona, May 2021, 123–24). The principles found in the doctrinal mastery passages can help us know how to respond to many situations that may arise in our lives.

For the following activity, students could write the situation on the front of a piece of paper and the doctrinal mastery scripture passage and explanation on the back.

Describe a situation in which someone could apply a truth from a doctrinal mastery passage you select. Explain how applying that truth could help the person receive the Savior’s help.

Consider collecting the students’ scenarios and reading them to the class. This will allow students to hear their classmates’ ideas and see that many different truths can apply to a single circumstance.

An option to increase student participation could be to read a scenario and invite students (individually or in small groups) to write down a doctrinal mastery reference and key phrase they think could help the person in the scenario. If a student or group identifies a different truth than the one written by the original student, invite them to explain how that truth could also help.

Reflecting on the Savior’s truths

Reflect on the doctrinal mastery scripture passages and key phrases taught during the first half of the year (see the chart that appears earlier in the lesson).

Write a brief letter to someone who will be starting seminary soon and does not know about doctrinal mastery passages. Explain to them how the passages will help them know the Savior better and will give them answers to questions and challenges that may arise in their lives. Consider sharing an example of when you or someone you know has been blessed by knowing and remembering the Savior’s truths taught in doctrinal mastery passages.

Supplemental Learning Activities

Role-play

President Joy D. Jones, who served as Primary General President, stated that role-playing “can fortify children to be prepared in a challenging setting” (“Essential Conversations,” Liahona, May 2021, 13). Students could be invited to identify a situation in which a truth from a doctrinal mastery passage could help. Then they could role-play responding to the situation using the truth from the doctrinal mastery passage.
