よく使われるイディオム

イディオム（慣用句）とは，単に個々の単語を組み合わせたのとは異なる意味を持つフレーズのことです。“piece of cake.”というフレーズを見てみましょう。“I want a piece of cake,”という文章は，「ケーキがほしい」という意味です。しかし，“Learning English with EnglishConnect is a piece of cake,”という文章は，「EnglishConnectで英語を学ぶのはとても簡単だ」という意味になります。“piece of cake”というイディオムには，「とても簡単なこと」という意味があるのです。

イディオムを用いると，よりネイティブスピーカーに近い，カジュアルな話し方になります。イディオムを聞くと，頭の中にイメージが湧き，ある種の感情が引き起こされます。英語では，全員が同じ状況にあるとき，“We’re all in the same boat.”と表現します。このフレーズを聞くと，船に乗っている人々が協力し合いながらどこかへ向かっているというイメージが湧きます。“We’re all in the same boat”と言うことで，運命共同体としての，理解ある雰囲気が生まれるのです。
