Moroni 7–9

Overview

Moroni, who wandered alone for many years after his people were destroyed, recorded his father’s words about the hope we can have in Christ of greater things to come. He encouraged us to use the Light of Christ to know right from wrong. He taught how to “lay hold upon every good thing” (Moroni 7:20, 25), especially charity, “the pure love of Christ” (Moroni 7:47). He also shared a letter from his father teaching that little children are saved through the Atonement of Christ and do not need baptism.

Prepare to Teach

The following information provides teachers with ideas of what may need to be prepared in advance for each lesson.

Moroni 7:1–19

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students rely on Jesus Christ to judge between good and evil.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to come prepared to share how the choices they make are influenced by their belief in Jesus Christ.

  • Image to display: The image with two squares that appear to be different shades of gray

  • Object: A flashlight for the suggested object lesson

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: To do the object lesson with the flashlight, make sure the space around you is dark. Consider closing blinds, moving to a room without many windows, or placing a blanket over your computer and yourself. (You may want to practice this using your computer camera before class to be sure the area is dark.) Invite students to read a scripture or a card that you hold up to the camera while it is still dark. Then shine a flashlight on the card or scripture and ask students to try again. It could also be effective to invite a student beforehand to give this object lesson to the class.

Moroni 7:20–43

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students feel increased hope through Jesus Christ.

Moroni 7:44–48

Lesson purpose: This lesson is intended to help students understand and seek charity in their lives.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to think of examples when the Savior showed love, as well as examples of Christlike love today.

  • Videos:The Coat” (2:07); “Gordon Hinckley: Lessons I Learned as a Boy” (4:04); “Charity: An Example of the Believers” (4:50); “Charity Never Faileth” (19:48; watch from time code 15:05 to 17:22)

  • Image to display: A picture of the Savior

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider inviting students to use the chat to share questions they have about charity. This will make their questions available for their classmates to read during the next portion of the lesson. Then display the activities students can do to try to find answers to their questions.

Doctrinal Mastery: Moroni 7:45–48

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students memorize the doctrinal mastery reference and key scripture phrase for Moroni 7:45–48, explain the doctrine taught in this passage, and apply principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge in real-life situations.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to think of situations they have experienced or witnessed in which they could practice charity

  • Content to display: A drawing of a heart on the board with the scripture reference and words of the key scripture phrase written around the heart in random order

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: To help your students review the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge, consider mixing up the words in each of the three principles. Type the scrambled principles one at a time in the chat and invite students to reply with the correct wording as fast as possible.

Moroni 8

Lesson purpose: This lesson is intended to help students better understand why little children do not need baptism and what that teaches us about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

  • Student preparation: You might share the story from the beginning of the lesson or something similar and ask students to think about how they might respond to the situation.

  • Video:And a Little Child Shall Lead Them” (16:55; watch from time code 4:40 to 5:59)

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: You could recreate the chart digitally and share your screen with students. As they report what they found in their study, you could type their findings in the appropriate column.
