Mormon 7–9

Overview

Mormon concluded his writings by teaching of Jesus Christ and the eternal happiness that awaits those who follow Him. After his death, his son Moroni received the plates and did all he could to protect them. He eventually buried them in the earth, trusting that they were “hid up unto the Lord” (title page of the Book of Mormon), to be brought forth one day “by the hand of the Lord” (Mormon 8:26). The Lord showed Moroni our day, and Moroni described sins and attitudes that would be prevalent in the last days. He invited us to “turn … unto the Lord” (Mormon 9:6) and gave other counsel to help us follow Jesus Christ.

Prepare to Teach

The following information provides teachers with ideas of what may need to be prepared in advance for each lesson.

Mormon 7

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students follow Jesus Christ and prepare to live with God in eternal happiness.

  • Student preparation: You could invite students to come to class prepared to share what makes them happy. Students could also talk to a family member about what makes that family member happy.

  • Content to display: The quiz about Mormon; the self-assessment at the end of the lesson

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider displaying the incomplete statement “I can dwell with God in eternal happiness as I …” and inviting students to finish the statement in the chat feature using what they find in Mormon 7:8–10.

Mormon 8:1–26

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students feel the importance of the Book of Mormon in their lives.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to ponder how their recent efforts to study the Book of Mormon indicate how they value the Book of Mormon.

  • Materials: A treasure map; instructions for stations to help students understand the value of the Book of Mormon

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: When students are studying to discover the value of the Book of Mormon, invite them to share what they are learning. Consider using the chat feature to allow them to list their favorite scriptures or the verses, teachings, or stories that are of great worth to them. Then ask several students to explain their choices.

Mormon 8:27–41; 9:1–6, 27–37

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students understand that the Book of Mormon was written to help us, in the latter days, turn to the Lord.

  • Student preparation: Consider inviting students to come to class prepared to share a scripture from the Book of Mormon that can help us turn to Jesus Christ.

  • Materials: A box or other object to represent a time capsule

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider dividing students into breakout rooms to share passages from the Book of Mormon that teach us about Jesus Christ and help us believe in Him.

Mormon 9:7–27

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students understand how having faith in God can allow Him to perform miracles in their lives.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to read or listen to Elder Ronald A. Rasband’s talk “Behold! I Am a God of Miracles” and to think about what they learn or what questions they have about miracles. This talk is available at ChurchofJesusChrist.org.

  • Materials for students: Paper, writing utensils, pictures, glue, and scissors for students to create pamphlets

  • Videos:Sanctify Yourselves” (4:37); “By Divine Design” (14:51; watch from time code 7:16 to 8:19)

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: When discussing miracles of the past, consider showing a video about Jesus Christ performing miracles. When discussing miracles that happen today, you might show one of the videos suggested in the lesson.

Doctrinal Mastery Review 23

Lesson purpose: This lesson is intended to help students memorize multiple scripture references and key scripture phrases, or an entire doctrinal mastery passage, from the second half of the Book of Mormon.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to choose a doctrinal mastery key scripture phrase and reference to memorize and to come to class prepared to share.

  • Image: An image of Moroni appearing to Joseph Smith

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Let students know they will be asked to share what scriptures they want to memorize. You could give them time to share with each other what they are doing to memorize, or you may choose one method of memorizing for all students to use.
