Memorize References and Key Scripture Phrases
Remembering scripture references and what they teach can bless your life in many ways. This lesson is intended to help you memorize multiple scripture references and key scripture phrases from the final 12 doctrinal mastery passages in the Book of Mormon.
Help students memorize key scripture phrases. When students memorize scripture references and key scripture phrases, they are more likely to remember and use them when sharing the gospel. Employ a variety of memorization methods, such as repetition, simple games, or memory cards, to make memorization more fun.
Student preparation: Invite students to think about things in their lives they have memorized. How were they able to memorize these things, and how has it helped them?

A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this review lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by the area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught while seminary is in session.
Memorizing
The following can help students quickly begin thinking about memorizing scriptures.
Alternatively, students could share something they have memorized (like movie lines, music lyrics, addresses, and so on) and discuss why they have these memorized and how they are able to retain them. It could also help to invite a recently returned missionary to share scriptures he or she has memorized and to testify of the importance of memorizing scriptures.
Read the following statement by Elder Richard G. Scott (1928–2015) of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles regarding the importance of memorizing scriptures:
Great power can come from memorizing scriptures. To memorize a scripture is to forge a new friendship. It is like discovering a new individual who can help in time of need, give inspiration and comfort, and be a source of motivation for needed change. (Richard G. Students who have access to electronic devices could use an app or a program to create the memory cards on their devices. Otherwise, distribute two pieces of paper to each student for this activity.
If students already have access to memory cards, consider skipping to the activities in the section, “Using your memory cards.”
Create a set of memory cards you can use throughout the year. If needed, use the following instructions to help you create your memory cards:
Be careful not to spend too much time creating memory cards. Ensure that students have sufficient time to use their cards to practice memorizing the scripture mastery references and key scripture phrases.
Step 1: Create 12 cards
Using an entire side of a piece of paper, draw a line down the middle of the paper to create two columns. Then draw two horizontal lines across the paper to create three boxes of equal size in each column, giving you a total of six boxes. See the following image for an example of what your page should look like:
Turn the paper over and do the same on that side. Repeat this process on a separate piece of paper to create the 12 boxes you need.
On one side of each of your papers, in each box write a scripture reference from the chart. In addition to the scripture reference, you might consider drawing a simple picture on this side of your papers that would help you remember the key scripture phrase. While the drawing should help you remember the key scripture phrase, it should also show the proper reverence and respect for the sacred nature of the scripture passage.
Step 2: Write the doctrinal mastery scripture references on one side
On one side of your two papers, write a scripture reference from the chart in each box. In addition to the scripture reference, you could also draw a simple picture that would help you remember the key scripture phrase.
Step 3: Write the key scripture phrases on the other side
Flip your papers over, and write in each box the key scripture phrase that matches the scripture reference on the opposite side.
Step 4: Cut out your cards
Cut each of the boxes you created into cards.
Using your memory cards
Be creative in using your memory cards. Choose one of the following ideas, or come up with one of your own. You may also choose to use the resources available on the doctrinal mastery app.

Quiz yourself: Hold the memory cards so you can see only the reference or only the key scripture phrase. Try saying the corresponding key scripture phrase or the corresponding reference. Repeat this several times with each reference and corresponding phrase.

Matching activity: Partner with someone. Have one person place his or her cards with the reference face up and the other place his or her cards with the key scripture phrase face up. Match the key scripture phrases to the corresponding references by placing the card with the key scripture phrase on top of the reference card.
Consider dividing students into groups of four. Invite each group to use one set of memory cards and to divide this set among members of the group. Have students place all cards on their desks with the references facing upward. Read a key scripture phrase to the class. The student in each group who has the card with the matching reference should then give the card to the teacher. Challenge each group to bring the correct card to the teacher within a time limit—for example, in five seconds. Encourage students to help other members of their team. Students could also be invited to switch cards with another person in their group to help them learn all the references and key scripture phrases.
Students could also work in pairs or small groups to come up with their own ways to use their memory cards.
When finished, help students discuss what they have learned and felt from their study and use of their memory cards. The following questions can help with this. You might also share personal experiences that have helped you see the value of one or more of the doctrinal mastery passages mentioned in this lesson.
