Similarities between Joseph of Egypt and Jesus Christ

The Old Testament contains many prophecies, stories, and symbols that foreshadow the life and mission of the Savior, Jesus Christ. One of these stories is that of Joseph of Egypt.

Joseph of Egypt	Jesus Christ
Joseph was a shepherd (see Genesis 37:2).	One of Christ’s names is “the good shepherd” (John 10:11).
Joseph was sold as a slave into Egypt (see Genesis 37:26–28).	Jesus was betrayed for 30 pieces of silver—the price of a slave (see Exodus 21:32; Matthew 26:15).
Joseph’s brothers did not recognize him when they came to Egypt to buy food (see Genesis 42:7–8).	Christ’s people did not recognize Him as the Savior (see Luke 4:22, 28–29; John 1:10).
Joseph revealed himself to his brothers when they came to speak with him a second time (see Genesis 45:1–5).	Christ will be revealed to Israel at His Second Coming (see Matthew 24:30–31; Doctrine and Covenants 88:104).
By following God’s guidance, Joseph had enough bread to save Egypt from famine (see Genesis 47:13–19).	Jesus Christ is “the bread of life” (John 6:35; see also verse 51).
