Sharing Time:

Scripture Scholars

“Search the scriptures; for … they are they which testify of me” (John 5:39).

Would you like to be known as a scholar? A scholar is someone who reads and studies and knows many important and useful things. You can become a scripture scholar by studying the scriptures every day.

The scriptures are the word of God. They include Jesus’ teachings when He was on the earth and other truths that He has revealed to His prophets and apostles. Jesus said, “Whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same” (D&C 1:38).

When you read the scriptures, you feel closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus. You learn about the commandments and how to choose the right. The scriptures can help you to gain a testimony of Jesus that will bless your life in very special ways.

Jesus said, “Study my word” (D&C 11:22). President Benson has asked you to read the Book of Mormon and memorize passages from it. If you can’t read, ask a parent or an older brother or sister to read the scriptures to you. When your family reads the scriptures together, you can all become scripture scholars!

Instructions:

To help you become a scripture scholar, look up the verses listed, and fill in the blanks with the correct words. Carefully cut scroll from page. Glue two dowels or sticks to the top and bottom of scroll. Roll the sticks and paper to middle, and you’ll have a scroll similar to ancient ones that contained the teachings of Jesus.

Sharing Time Ideas

  1. Assign children partners and memorize one or more scriptures. Recite to each other.

  2. Have children make scripture memorization chart for their personal use.

  3. For younger children, recite short scripture beginning with words Jesus said. Toss a soft toy or ball to child and have him repeat scripture.

Keep tossing toy to children until scripture is memorized; then begin another one.

  4. Children can do choral readings by reciting scripture passages as group.

  5. Encourage children to write in their journals their feelings about things that they read in scriptures and/or to copy passages that they want to remember. Younger children could draw pictures.
