What do we know about the Millennium?

Jesus Christ

He Comes Again to Rule and Reign, by Mary R. Sauer

Here are some things the Lord has revealed to prophets about the Millennium:

  • It is a 1,000-year period after Jesus Christ’s Second Coming and the removal of the wicked from the earth (see Revelation 20:4; Moses 7:47–49, 64–65).

  • The earth will be renewed and sanctified (see Isaiah 65:17; Doctrine and Covenants 88:18).

  • Jesus Christ will reign personally upon the earth (see Articles of Faith 1:10).

  • He will direct the affairs of His kingdom from centers in Jerusalem (see Zechariah 14) and in the New Jerusalem built on the American continent (see Articles of Faith 1:10).

  • The Millennium will be a time of peace (see Isaiah 2:4).

  • There will be no death (see Doctrine and Covenants 101:29), but life will otherwise continue mostly as normal.

  • Children will be born, grow old, and then be changed to an immortal state (see Doctrine and Covenants 63:51; 101:30–31).

  • Satan will be bound and have no power to tempt people because of the righteousness of the people who remain (see Revelation 20:2; 1 Nephi 22:26; Doctrine and Covenants 101:28).

  • The people remaining on the earth after Christ’s Second Coming will be good people, including both Church members and those who were not Church members. Church members will share the fulness of the gospel with those who have not received it.

  • Temple building will continue, and the work of performing temple ordinances for all who did not receive them in this life will be hastened through revelation.

  • All things will be revealed (see Doctrine and Covenants 101:32–34).

  • Many things we were deprived of in this life will be set right.

  • At the end of the 1,000 years, Satan will be loosed (see Doctrine and Covenants 88:111) for a season to gather his armies.

  • Then there will be a final battle between those who follow Jesus Christ and those who follow Satan. Christ’s armies will be led by Michael, who was Adam, and Satan and his followers will be cast out forever. (See Doctrine and Covenants 88:112–115.)
