Second Sunday
2. Learn more about the Word of Wisdom
The Word of Wisdom is a revelation that the Lord gave to the Prophet Joseph Smith in 1833. It’s recorded in Doctrine and Covenants 89. The Word of Wisdom is the Lord’s guide to help you take care of your body and mind. It teaches what things are good for you and what to avoid so you can feel your best and stay close to the Spirit.
Here are some questions and learning activities you could try:
-
What promises are attached to living the Word of Wisdom?
The Lord called the Word of Wisdom “a principle with promise” (Doctrine and Covenants 89:3). Read Doctrine and Covenants 89, and list the principles and promises you find. For example, some of the principles could include “walking in obedience” (verse 18), avoiding excess (see verse 12), and freedom from addiction.
-
How can you live the Word of Wisdom daily?
To protect your body, the Word of Wisdom helps you stay healthy, make good choices, and keep your mind clear so you can feel the Spirit more easily. Talk about how living the Word of Wisdom affects your choices each day (see Doctrine and Covenants 89).
-
How does the Lord bless those who obey the Word of Wisdom?
In the Old Testament, Daniel and his friends obeyed the law of health the Lord had given for their time. Read Daniel 1 to learn about their experience. What physical and spiritual blessings did they receive? (See verses 15, 17–20.)
