Sharing Joy in Kenya

When Robert found the gospel, he just had to share it with everyone he knew. No, really—everyone.

Since being baptized in August 2024, Robert L., 18, of Kenya, has brought more than 50 friends to church—and baptized 25 of them!

Those were the totals when we talked to him a few months ago, anyway. They’ve probably gone up since then.

Robert, a member of the Bukuru Branch in the Kisumu Kenya District, was introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in early 2024, when he met an American man doing humanitarian work in Kenya.

“I was not really expecting that my life would get better,” Robert says. “My parents did not have money; they could not send me to school.” (In Kenya, even public school costs money.)

“But I knew Heavenly Father would help me. I started praying and reading the New Testament. Then I met my sponsor.”

His “sponsor” was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who blessed Robert’s life in two ways: he helped him obtain his schooling and, more importantly, shared the gospel with him (as did another young man who had recently joined the Church). Robert was baptized about six months later.

Robert L. of Kenya has invited dozens of people to church—neighbors, schoolmates, kids he plays sports with—everyone.

Paying It Forward

Naturally, Robert wanted to share his new blessings with others. He couldn’t sponsor anyone’s education. But he could certainly teach them the gospel!

He began inviting people to church—neighbors, schoolmates, kids he played sports with—everyone he knew. “I came one Sunday with, like, five, then on another Sunday I came with 10,” he says. “Then I sent the missionaries to them so they can understand and know that this Church is true and they can experience what I experience.”

It wasn’t long before some of Robert’s friends chose to be baptized and asked him to perform the ordinance.

The Church is growing fast in Africa, in part because of disciples like Robert. He baptized 10 people one week, 11 the next week, and “only” 4 the following week.

More than a dozen of those newly baptized friends were with him at an FSY conference in Kenya last December, including one friend who had already baptized one of his friends.

See how the momentum builds? It feeds on itself!

Feeling the Spirit

Fredrick A., 17, says that when his friend Robert invited him to church, he felt the Spirit so strongly that he couldn’t deny it.

“When I got to church, the Spirit of God was sent upon me,” Fredrick says. “As I was given the Book of Mormon, I started reading it. If I don’t understand, I always ask my branch president and pray.”

Gift M., 18, is another friend Robert baptized. “I am happy to be part of the true Church—the only true Church in the universe,” Gift says with a smile.

Many of the people Robert has invited to church have chosen to be baptized, and they are inviting others to come as well.

Still More Work Ahead

Robert plans to serve a full-time mission as soon as he finishes school (as do Gift and Fredrick). Why does he want to do that when he clearly already knows how to share the gospel?

“I have to go on a mission to experience some more and learn more,” Robert says. “It will strengthen my faith and change my attitude. It’s what God wants me to do.”

Robert isn’t done sharing the gospel. He plans to serve a mission. ”It’s what God wants me to do,” he says.
