A Sundial for Dad

To make a replica of a sundial, you will need: compass, pencil, piece of wood 1′ (30 cm) square and 1″ (2. 5 cm) thick, hammer, and large nail.

  1. Using compass, draw largest circle possible on piece of wood.

  2. On edge of circle, make 15 dots and number them as shown.

  3. Carefully hammer nail partway into wood on mark made by compass point.

  4. Place finished dial outside in sunshine with dot above 12 facing north. If shadow cast by nail falls on dot above 3, it is about three o’clock in the afternoon. As sun moves across sky, shadow will move around numbers of sundial.
