Primary Painted Cards and Posters to Welcome Refugees

Refugee Week started in 1998 as a result of hostility in the media, and society in general, towards refugees and asylum seekers. Now an established part of the UK’s cultural calendar, Refugee Week is an outstanding national initiative working to counter this negative climate, defending the importance of sanctuary and the benefits it can bring to both refugees and to host communities.

The Primary children of Watford Stake were asked if they would like to paint messages of welcome. Each ward participated and sent their paintings to Elder and Sister Hafen, the senior missionary couple who run an LDS Charities Friendship Centre.

The children chose their own themes and many featured welcoming hands or feet that had walked a long way to get to the UK, and hearts for love.

One Primary child went to school the next day and told her friends what she had done. Inspired by this, one of those friends painted a welcome poster which was sent to the Friendship Centre. A great piece of missionary work by the Primary child!
