After you’ve studied the scripture passages for this week and reviewed the questions and activities in the manual, consider sharing any of the following articles and activities with your family. These additional resources selected by the Church magazines staff can assist you as you strive to teach the gospel in your home.

Faith Requires Action

James taught that our faith is demonstrated by our efforts to live the gospel. When we have faith in Christ, we are willing to act on His teachings and do whatever He asks of us.

Articles

  • “Fourth Floor, Last Door.” In this general conference address, Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, then Second Counselor in the First Presidency, tells the story of a missionary who persisted in faith to keep knocking on doors.

  • “Hesitantly Faithful, Abundantly Blessed.” In this New Era article, a missionary shares the blessing that came from acting in faith even when he was uncertain.

  • “The Best Test I Ever Failed.” In this story from the Friend, a girl learns she has to study (not just pray) in order to get help on a test.

The Power of Words

James taught about the power our language has to hurt or bless the lives of others. How can we ensure that our communication reflects the standards of disciples of Christ?

Articles

  • “The Tongue of Angels.” In this general conference address, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles counsels us to be more aware of the way we speak to one another.

  • “A Soft Answer.” In this story for young children, a girl learns that speaking kindly to her younger sister will help them both get along. Find a “soft-answer reminder” coloring badge here.

  • “Super Spencer.” In this story from the Friend, a boy learns that he can use his words to bless those around him.

Activities

  • “More Than Words.” Read this short New Era article based on the For the Strength of Youth booklet, and then discuss how you can help lift and show love for others through your words.

  • “I Can Use Kind Words.” In this activity from the Friend, children can color the speech bubbles as they practice using kind words. Click here for other child-friendly stories, activities, and media about language.

Love All People

James warned against passing negative judgments on others and counseled us to be aware of the biases and prejudices we carry. While he warned particularly against despising the poor, the central message of his teachings can be found in the commandment to love all men.

  • “Choosing Charity: That Good Part.” In this general conference address, Sister Bonnie D. Parkin, former Relief Society General President, invites us to refrain from judging one another.

  • “Building Bridges.” This New Era article shares excerpts from an address given by President Russell M. Nelson to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1978 revelation on the priesthood. President Nelson reminds us that we are all brothers and sisters, independent of culture or nationality.

  • “Different but the Same.” This child-friendly message from President Henry B. Eyring teaches that every person is a child of God. The second page includes an activity about unity.
