As millions of Catholics worldwide mourned the August 6 death of Pope Paul VI, the First Presidency issued a statement of praise and condolence:

“The death of Pope Paul VI closes a distinguished lifelong career dedicated to the service of mankind. We express our sincere condolences to the millions of people who looked to him for spiritual guidance and found in him an example of selflessness, devotion, and courage.”

Elder Charles A. Didier was the Church’s official representative at the pope’s funeral in Rome August 12.

Presidencies of two temples have been announced. William Roberts of New Zealand is serving as president of the New Zealand Temple; temple matron is Norma Johnston Roberts. Counselors are Alexander Wishart and Leonard W. J. Green. They began serving as a presidency July 14.

Wilbur W. Cox of Manti, Utah, has been called as president of the Manti Temple. His wife, Leonora B. Cox, is temple matron. Serving with President Cox are Archibald J. Anderson of Fairview, Utah, and Kline Black of Blanding, Utah.

With ceremony and memorializing, another monument has been dedicated in Nauvoo, Illinois. The Exodus to Greatness monument, located on the banks of the Mississippi River, where thousands of Mormon pioneers began their historical westward migration, was dedicated August 19 by Elder Mark E. Petersen of the Quorum of the Twelve.

The monument complex includes a stone-mounted bronze frieze created by Lyle W. Beddes of Salt Lake City, and a thirty-six-foot flagpole donated by the Sons of the Utah Pioneers and the Provo Utah Edgemont Stake.

General Relief Society President Barbara B. Smith attended a one-day seminar on employment at the White House in Washington, D.C., in July. The seminar was sponsored by Rosalynn Carter, wife of United States President Jimmy Carter.

For the first time in its ninety-two-year history, LDS Business College at Salt Lake City is forming an alumni association. On Founder’s Day, November 18, a reception and dance will be held to inaugurate the college alumni association. Some 20,000 students have graduated from the college since it began under the direction of Dr. Karl G. Maeser 15 November 1886.
