Accessibility at the Historic Sites

Learn more about accessibility at the historic sites.
The buildings and landscapes from the 19th century were not built with accessibility in mind, which can present challenges for visitors with accessibility needs. The historic sites are committed to making all reasonable accommodations for our programs, services, and facilities.

We are continually improving accessibility at the historic sites. Please see the web page for each site to find helpful information as you prepare for your visit, or contact the specific site you plan to visit for additional information on available accessibility accommodations.

Service Animals

Trained service animals are allowed at the historic sites, including inside historic buildings. However, pets and emotional support, therapy, comfort, and companion animals are not allowed. For more information, please see the “Service Animals” section on ChurchofJesusChrist.org.

Visitors with Limited Mobility

Parking

There is designated accessible parking at most historic sites. Please see parking options on the individual amenities maps under “What to Expect” for each region listed on the Historic Sites and Museums website.

To find additional information on parking availability near a specific location, please refer to the parking information in the accessibility section of the individual location pages.

Restrooms

Most public restrooms at the historic sites are wheelchair accessible. Please see specific restroom locations on the individual amenities maps under “What to Expect” for each region listed on the Historic Sites and Museums website.

Wheelchair and Other Assistive Device Availability

There is a limited number of wheelchairs available for visitors to borrow. Availability varies based on immediate needs. We encourage those who may need wheelchairs or other assistive devices to bring these items with them.

Seating Areas During Tours

Most tours include limited seating options. Please be aware, however, that seating may not be available in every room of each building.

Additional information on seating availability at a specific location can be found on the individual location pages.

Building Accessibility

Most of the upper floors of the historic buildings are not wheelchair accessible. Some tours at the historic sites cover only the first floor of the building. For other tours where elevators are not available, missionaries can adapt the presentation as needed.

Additional information on the mobility accessibility of a specific location can be found on the individual location pages.

Terrain and Flooring Descriptions

Terrain at the historic sites includes asphalt roads, compacted granite pathways, concrete or brick walkways, wood chips, and dirt. Please be aware that some of the roads and sidewalks are in fair condition and may present hazards, including potholes and uneven surfaces. The flooring inside buildings is typically carpet, wood, or brick and is generally in good repair.

Terrain and flooring descriptions at specific venues can be found on the individual location pages.

Visitors Who Are Blind or Have a Visual Impairment

Tours are facilitated by missionaries who can provide verbal descriptions of the buildings, furnishings, and exhibits upon request. Some of the videos at the sites are available with descriptive audio upon request. Recently constructed and renovated sites provide Unified English Braille descriptions and audio as well as tactile experiences for many of the exhibits.

Visitors Who Are Hard of Hearing or Deaf

Depending on staffing, missionaries who can communicate in American Sign Language may be available. Closed captions are available for some of the films at the historic sites. Please contact each site to inquire about availability.

Visitors with Autism

A brief description of what to expect at each location can be found on the individual location pages.

If you would like more detailed information on what to expect or if you would like to share any additional needs with our staff, please contact each site.

Sensory spaces are also available at many sites.
