2024 Quick Thought from Come Follow Me
Gospel Living

People can respond differently to the same teachings.

Let’s be like Nephi and Sam!

Nephi and Sam grew up in the same household with the same parents as Laman and Lemuel. Lehi and Sariah loved all of their children and taught them all the gospel. Yet the whole history of the Book of Mormon stems from the fact that some of those children accepted the gospel and some didn’t.

How can that happen? They were all taught the same things!

You might have seen this in your own life. People can experience the same things but come away with different attitudes about it.

In Lehi’s dream, he tastes the fruit of the tree—which represents the love of God—and is filled “with exceedingly great joy” (1 Nephi 8:12). He wants to share it with his family. His wife and two of his sons accept his invitation and also eat the fruit. But Laman and Lemuel refuse.

Sadly, Lehi then sees this play out in real life. His two older sons reject the gospel while Sariah, Nephi, and Sam are faithful.

Another lesson is related to that one: People have their own agency. What other people do is often out of your hands.

Yet another lesson is to remember there is always hope because of Jesus Christ and His Atonement. Pray for those you love to turn to Christ and have their hearts softened and their testimonies strengthened. In this life and beyond there will be opportunities for people to choose Christ and receive His transforming power.

Nephi Moments

When are some times when you feel like you’ve made a good choice, like Nephi would have if he were in your shoes?
