New “Give Back” Video Highlights Members’ Service in Community Devastated by Flooding

A new video in the Give Back series highlights cleanup efforts of local Church members and missionaries in Columbia, South Carolina, who were quick to respond to the needs of 2015 flood victims.

In early October 2015, catastrophic flooding hit South Carolina. The so-called “1,000-year-storm” cost several lives, breached dams, and destroyed entire neighborhoods.
A new video from the Church documents cleanup efforts of local Church members and missionaries in Columbia, South Carolina, who were quick to respond to the needs of flood victims in their community.
Part of the Mormon Channel’s Give Back series, the video shows how hundreds of volunteers from several stakes showed up in yellow vests or donned white jumpsuits to help their neighbors by recovering possessions from muddy basements, demolishing houses, and delivering food and other necessities.
“The Savior has set an example for us, and we intend to follow that example,” says Carl L. Reynolds, president of the Columbia South Carolina Stake. “Our testimonies will reflect that in our actions.”

According to President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, helping those in need includes those in our own family, neighborhood, and community. “We are all brothers and sisters. Our two great commandments are to serve God and our fellowman. We are to reach out to those in need and help them—and not just by impressive declarations, but by one-on-one help, eye-to-eye help, by lifting up those who are in need,” he said in a recent interview (see related story).
