The missionary training center in Guatemala City, Guatemala, will close effective January 2020, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced September 19.

Church spokesman Daniel Woodruff said plans for the future use of the missionary training center facilities will be determined in coordination with local leaders.

“This decision comes as part of a long process of learning, planning, and determining the best use of resources worldwide according to the needs and demands of each area,” Woodruff said in a Newsroom release. “Specifically, this move will allow for the better use of the Mexico MTC, which is well equipped to accommodate large groups of missionaries who are being trained in the Spanish language.”

The Guatemala MTC was initially established in 1986 and moved to a new location next to the Guatemala City Temple in 1994, according to a Church News article. Following a remodeling and expansion effort, the new Guatemala MTC was rededicated in May 2014 by Elder Carlos H. Amado, who was then President of the Church’s Central America Area.

This MTC has usually served missionaries who are assigned to serve in Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Panama.
