    The Prophet’s Promise to Youth

    Breanna Call Herbert

What did President Nelson promise the youth of the Church?

Just like Moses led the children of Israel out of Egypt or Lehi led his people out of Jerusalem, President Russell M. Nelson has been called by God to lead us today. And like the prophets of old, he speaks the will of the Lord and gives us warnings, commandments, and promises. (Watch “Follow the Prophet.”) On June 3, 2018, President Nelson made some wonderful promises to the youth of the Church. (Watch or read the full broadcast.)

    What were they?

The Promise That the Holy Ghost Will Give You Direction

Oftentimes when the Lord promises us something, that promises comes with two parts: (1) our part and (2) a promised blessing if we do our part.

“I promise you—not the person sitting next to you, but you—that, wherever you are in the world, wherever you are on the covenant path—even if, at this moment, you are not centered on the path—I promise you that if you will sincerely and persistently do the spiritual work needed to develop the crucial spiritual skill of learning how to hear the whisperings of the Holy Ghost, you will have all the direction you will ever need in your life,” said President Nelson. “You will be given answers to your questions in the Lord’s own way and in His own time. … When you know your life is being directed by God, regardless of the challenges and disappointments that may and will come, you will feel joy and peace.”

    What is your part?

What is the promised blessing if you do your part?

The Promise That God Will Gather Israel

Sometimes a promise from one of the Lord’s servants is a testimony.

“I testify that the gathering is now, and it is real,” said President Nelson.

So what is the gathering of Israel?

“The gathering of Israel ultimately means offering the gospel of Jesus Christ to God’s children on both sides of the veil who have neither made crucial covenants with God nor received their essential ordinances,” he said.

The Promise That You Can Help

President Nelson also promised that as you make goals and make sacrifices to help gather Israel, you will be guided. There are a lot of ways you can help gather Israel. You can invite your friends to go to the temple, share a Book of Mormon with someone who has never read it, or study the scriptures with the goal to be able to answer more gospel questions.

Anytime you do anything that helps anyone—on either side of the veil—take a step toward making covenants with God and receiving their essential baptismal and temple ordinances, you are helping to gather Israel.” No matter how you help someone become closer to making covenants with God, you are helping gather Israel.

President Nelson has specifically invited you to help with this gathering! He has asked you to pray that all of God’s children will receive the gospel. He has asked you to share a copy of For the Strength of Youth with someone else. And President Nelson promises that you will be guided to know who and how to help. These promises will be fulfilled. You will receive the direction you need in this life if you listen to the Holy Ghost. And with your help, Israel will be gathered again.

As President Nelson said, “How exciting is that!”

“I know President Russell M. Nelson is a true prophet of God! He is truly a prophet. Sustaining him is not enough, following and acting in his invitations … is the way a sustain him. I love President Nelson so much! I sustain him!” — Edwin B., age 18, Philippines
