    Opening the Door

    Bethany Bartholomew

We’re told to “open the door” to the Savior. But what does that mean and how do we do that in our lives?

Some things can be really loud. Cars honking, music blasting, people talking—you name it. But often the most important things in life are really quiet. One of those important things is the quiet, persistent prompting to let the Savior into our lives. “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20). But how exactly do we hear His voice, and what can we do to open the door by opening our hearts to the Savior?

    How to Hear the Knock

The scriptures often encourage us to “be still” (see Psalm 4:4, 46:10; D&C 101:16). But sometimes noises and distractions from the world around us can make it hard to stop and listen for that “still small voice” of the Spirit prompting us to turn to the Savior (see 1 Kings 19:11–13). Don’t worry. You have the power to create those still moments in your life.

Start by finding a quiet place. You can go outside or even just sit in your room. If you need to, listen to peaceful music or hymns or even put your headphones on without any music playing to crowd out other influences and create a few minutes of peace.

Then, wherever you are, be still. Think about spiritual things, read the scriptures, and pray. As the Spirit speaks to you in these quiet settings, practice recognizing those messages by writing them down or even saying them out loud to yourself. Then act on those promptings. The more you practice, the more you’ll understand how the Spirit speaks to you. You’ll start to recognize promptings more often and in more places.

    How to Open the Door

Once you’ve heard the knock by listening to the Spirit, you’ve got to take action and open the door to your heart. You can do that by opening a few other important things too.

Open the scriptures. Really study the words and listen for the Spirit’s guidance to help you draw closer to the Savior and understand His teachings.

Open talks from general conference. As you listen to or read the words of living prophets bearing witness of Christ, you will feel the Spirit teaching you and helping you.

Open a conversation with your parents or leaders. If you have a question about anything related to the gospel, you can turn to those you trust to help you find answers. Those answers will strengthen your testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Open up to your friends about your beliefs. As you share the Savior’s message, His light will fill your heart and help you know what to say.

    When You Open the Door

After you’ve accepted the Savior’s invitation and opened the door to let Him into your life, what happens?

Only blessings can come from opening the door of our hearts. As you let the Savior into your life, He will heal you, strengthen you, and build you up to be the divine child of God He sees in you. It all starts when you open the door.

Will We Listen for the Knock?

“With all the strength of my soul I testify that our Heavenly Father loves each one of us. … His Son, our Savior and Redeemer, speaks to each of us today: ‘Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him’ (Revelation 3:20).

“Will we listen for that knock? Will we hear that voice? Will we open that door to the Lord, that we may receive the help He is so ready to provide? I pray that we will.” —President Thomas S. Monson
