The 2016 Mutual theme album is a collection of songs written by Latter-day Saint youth about staying true to our beliefs in today’s ever-changing world.

It is never too late to change for the better.

That’s the message of Kawika Kotoa’s song “New Life.”

“Nobody’s a lost cause, and if you are doing what you know you should be doing, then everything works out for the best,” Kawika said. “I feel like nowadays kids can feel really lost and like they’re not good enough, but if we remember that Heavenly Father loves us no matter what, and we follow Him, then our life will have a sense of direction and purpose.”

When Kawika was 11, his family stopped going to church, so he stopped going to church. He fell in with the wrong crowd and made some poor choices. Eventually, the only that kept him going to school was his love of performing and the arts. He wanted to change; he just couldn’t figure out how. But then Kawika met some really influential friends in the performing programs who started him back on the straight and narrow.

“The more and more I hung out with them, the more I wanted to change and be a better person,” Kawika said. “Eventually I started going back to church and really making some big changes in my life: the friends I hung out with, the music I listened to, the way I treated people, and really just my general perspective on life. Knowing what I know now, looking back I never would have gone down that road. And it’s all thanks to the gospel, the Atonement, and the love that our Savior has for us.”
