    Behind “Silent”

    Grayson O’Very

We can all be happier if we’re willing to open our hearts and accept the Savior’s Atonement.

The music from the 2015 Mutual theme album was written and performed by youth. This is Grayson’s story about writing his song, “Silent.”

I have a lot of friends who don’t seem to be very happy. If they have something that’s bothering them, they just carry it around with them and don’t do anything about it. Then I have other friends who talk about what’s bothering them. They share it. That way we can both learn from what they’re going through. I can sometimes give them advice. It seems like as soon as they talk about it, they generally start to feel happier. I feel like if we all opened up to each other more, we’d all be happier.

That’s what my song is about. We shouldn’t be silent.

The Savior’s Atonement is what is going to get us where we need to be.

I was going through something in my own life once that was pulling me down. I didn’t even realize it was pulling me down at the time. But suddenly it just crashed down on me. I was hit hard. And I thought, “Hey, this is something I need to fix.” So I talked to my parents first. That was one of the scariest things to me, just talking to my parents about it. They were totally accepting and understanding. They said, “We wish we would have known earlier. We could have helped you sooner.” Then I talked with my bishop about it, and everything was cleared up. I was so afraid in the beginning. But there was no need to be scared. I was so happy after talking to them. It was awesome.

    Don’t Be Silent

Heavenly Father puts specific people in our lives who can help us, and those are the people we need to open up to. We’re all struggling along in this game of life, and sometimes we stumble. But we’re all trying to get to the same place. We can help each other. If we work with each other, it will help us get to where we need to be.

    The Savior Will Forgive

But the most important people we need to talk to are our Heavenly Father and the Savior. There’s a specific part of the song where it says:

The Savior is waiting. He wants to forgive.

And that is completely true. The Savior’s Atonement is what is going to get us where we need to be. It’s always there. But He is waiting for us to access it. He wants to forgive us. He wants to help us get through our difficult times. All we need to do is make the decision.

    Becoming Stronger

Nobody wants to talk about their problems. It’s like admitting your own weakness. But if we share our weaknesses with each other, then we can help each other become stronger.
