6 Things You Should Know Before Getting Your Patriarchal Blessing

Your patriarchal blessing is revelation just for you! But why do I need one and how can I prepare?

    1. What is a patriarchal blessing?

“A patriarchal blessing is a revelation to the recipient, even a white line down the middle of the road, to protect, inspire, and motivate activity and righteousness. A patriarchal blessing literally contains chapters from your book of eternal possibilities.” —President Thomas S. Monson, “Your Patriarchal Blessing: A Liahona of Light,” October 1986 general conference

Your blessing has two main purposes. First, it will declare your lineage, or what tribe of Israel you belong to. Second, it will contain information like promises, admonitions, and warnings to help guide you.

    2. Why is lineage important?

Knowing your lineage can be a helpful guide in your life. When you belong to one of the twelve tribes, you can receive specific blessings and missions. What are these blessings and missions? Check out what Israel said in the blessings he gave his sons (the heads of each of the tribes) in Genesis 49.

    3. How old should I be to receive my blessing?

There is no set age, but you should be old enough to appreciate the sacred nature of the blessing. Many members start thinking about receiving their blessing in their early teenage years.

“When you understand the meaning and purpose of a patriarchal blessing and have a sincere desire to do the work of the Lord, you should be mature enough to receive your blessing.” —Julie B. Beck, “You Have a Noble Birthright,” April 2006 general conference

    4. How can I prepare?

This is a very sacred occasion. You should prepare to receive the Lord’s counsel to you! Do all you can to draw closer to the Lord. Prayer, fasting, scripture study, meditation, and repentance can help your spirit become more humble and teachable.

    5. How do I receive the blessing?

First, talk to your bishop or branch president. If you are ready and worthy, you will receive a recommend. After that, you can schedule an appointment with the patriarch in your area.

    6. What do I do with my blessing?

Keep it in a safe place, and read it often. It’s personal counsel from God to you! You may share it with immediate family members, but you should not share it publicly. Remember, your blessing is sacred and personal. Your blessing is also eternal! Your blessing may include possibilities beyond mortal life. Also, all blessings mentioned in your patriarchal blessing are based on your faithfulness and the Lord’s timing.

“Your patriarchal blessing is your passport to peace in this life. It is a Liahona of light to guide you unerringly to your heavenly home.” —President Thomas S. Monson, “Your Patriarchal Blessing: A Liahona of Light,” October 1986 general conference
