Apply this simple preflight checklist for a smooth “takeoff” into general conference.
Whether it’s their first flight or 51st flight, pilots are required to review a preflight checklist. They evaluate themselves to make sure they are mentally and physically able to fly the plane. Then they check the plane for problems and prepare it for flight.
Whether it’s our first time or 51st time watching general conference, we too can make sure we are spiritually prepared to receive revelation at the upcoming general conference.
Here are six basic steps for a general conference “preflight checklist”:
1. Get to know the General Authorities.
Be familiar with the names and faces of General Authorities so you can better concentrate on their messages for you.
2. Briefly review talks from the previous general conference.
Look at messages that have stuck out to you in the past. It will be easier to make connections from the previous conference to what will be said this weekend.
3. Ponder and write down questions about the gospel or areas in your life.
President Dieter F. Uchtdorf said: “When it comes to spiritual truth, how can we know that we are on the right path? One way is by asking the right questions—the kind that help us ponder our progress and evaluate how things are working for us.”
4. Pray for the Lord’s guidance during general conference.
Have faith that He will bring your attention to the words and messages that are meant just for you. Remember to listen with your heart.
5. Gather any note-taking materials you’ll be using.
It’s a good idea to prepare your scriptures and note-taking materials ahead of time so you’re not scrambling around during the opening hymn. If you’re using electronic devices to record notes, make sure they’re fully charged.
6. Get a good night’s sleep.
It’s tempting to stay up late on weekends. However, enough sleep will clear your mind and make it easier to discern the Lord’s revelation given through the speakers to you.
