Overview

Mortality

Mortality refers to the time from birth until physical death. This is sometimes called the second estate. Our spirit is united with our body, giving us opportunities to grow and develop in ways that were not possible in our premortal life. This part of our existence is a time of learning in which we can prove ourselves, choose to come unto Christ, and prepare to be worthy of eternal life. It is also a time when we can help others find the truth and gain a testimony of the plan of salvation.

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf taught, “When we passed through the veil and entered this mortal life, we knew that we would no longer remember the life before. There would be opposition and adversity and temptation. But we also knew that gaining a physical body was of paramount importance for us. Oh, how we hoped that we would quickly learn to make the correct choices, withstand the temptations of Satan, and eventually return to our beloved Parents in Heaven.”1
