Using the Study Tools

Note: These instructions are related to the Gospel Library Online found on the Church’s website. These instructions may not reflect existing functionality, placement, or labels that are used in the Gospel Library mobile app. While many things are identical, there may be some differences

Using the Annotation Toolbar

The annotation toolbar function in the Gospel Library Online is a tool that will help you get the most out of your scripture and gospel study experience. The toolbar will allow you to highlight text, make notes, create cross-links, and copy and share the content you are reading.

Note: The annotation toolbar functions are accessible only when signed in.

What study tools are part of the Annotation Toolbar?

The annotation toolbar contains the following functions in order as they appear:

  • Mark (Mark icon for use as a navigation button in the Gospel Library App.) — will allow you to highlight or underline the selected text.
  • Style (Style icon for use as a navigation button in the Gospel Library App.) — the Mark icon will change to the Style icon once text has been selected and a highlight or mark has been made. Style will allow you to change the color or treatment of your highlight or mark.
  • Note (Add Note) — will open the note editor so you can add a note to the selected content.
  • Tag (Tag icon for use as a navigation button in the Gospel Library App.) — will open the tag feature. You can use tags to label content related to topics that are important to you. You can browse tagged content in the Notes section of the website.
  • Add to(Notebook icon for use as a navigation button in the Gospel Library App.) — opens the add to notebook panel. You can use notebooks to store notes, gather resources related to what you’re currently studying, or prepare a lesson or talk. You can see and manage notebooks in the Notes section of the website.
  • Link (Link icon for use as a navigation button in the Gospel Library App.) — opens the link panel. A link is a personal cross-reference or scripture chain that you can use to connect content throughout the library.
  • Remove (Remove icon for use as a navigation button in the Gospel Library App.) — will delete the selected highlight. Once a highlight is deleted, it cannot be undone.
  • Copy (Copy icon for use as a navigation button in the Gospel Library App.) — copies the selected text to the clipboard so it can be pasted in a note or in a different application.
  • Share (Share icon for use as a navigation button in the Gospel Library App.) — allows you to share the page or selected text through social media, email, or a link.

Marking or Highlighting text

Note: You must be signed in to use the annotation toolbar.

Follow these steps to highlight or mark text:

  1. Within the content you are reading, select the text you want to highlight by dragging your mouse over the text (on a desktop computer) or holding your finger down on the text (on a mobile device). You can adjust the selection with the start and end points.
  2. From the annotation toolbar, click on the Mark (Mark icon for use as a navigation button in the Gospel Library App.) button to highlight the selected text.

Editing the Style or Color of a Highlight

Once a passage is highlighted, you can adjust its appearance using the following steps:

  1. Select the highlight that you want to edit.
  2. Select the Style (Style icon for use as a navigation button in the Gospel Library App.) button to view the available color and style options.
  3. Choose your desired style or color. Your change will be saved automatically.

Removing Highlights

Note: Removing a highlight cannot be undone.

To remove a highlight, do the following:

  1. Select the highlighted text you want to remove.
  2. If you have multiple highlights, a menu will appear to the right asking you to select which highlight you want to edit.
  3. Using the annotation toolbar, click the Remove (Remove icon for use as a navigation button in the Gospel Library App.) button.
  4. You will then be asked to confirm your action. If you want to continue, click Delete; otherwise, click Cancel. Please note, deleting a highlight or mark cannot be undone.

Notes

Note: You must be signed in to use the annotation toolbar.

To make a note, highlight a section or word and click the Note (Add Note) icon. A box will appear on the right side of the screen, where you can make a note. Your note will auto-save after a few seconds. Click the X to exit the box. A small, blue sticky note will appear next to the text you selected.

Creating notes to capture your thoughts can be a useful study aid. Follow these steps to create and manage notes:

  1. Select the text you want to connect a note to.
  2. Select the Note (Add Note) button
  3. Type your note in the notes panel that will open. This can include a title and any text you choose to include. You may also choose to assign a notebook or tag to your note at the same time. Your note will auto-save every few seconds.

Remove or Delete a Note

Note: Removing a note cannot be undone.

To remove or delete a note, do the following:

  1. Select the blue note icon to the right of the highlighted text.
  2. A panel will appear. Select the three dots (Horizontal Menu Button) to open a dropdown menu.
  3. Select Delete from the available options.
  4. You will then be asked to confirm your action. If you want to continue, click Delete; otherwise, click Cancel. Please note, deleting a note cannot be undone.

Edit an Existing Note

To edit an existing a note, do the following:

  1. Select the blue note icon to the right of the highlighted text.
  2. A panel will appear. Select the three dots (Horizontal Menu Button) to open a dropdown menu.
  3. Select Edit from the available options.
  4. You will now be able to edit and add to your note.
