Digital Contact Information Visibility Settings

Policy and Principles

“Members can restrict the visibility of their digital contact information. They do this by selecting privacy levels in their household profile. Stake and ward leaders should respect the privacy settings that members select. These leaders also ensure that information is used for approved Church purposes only” (General Handbook: Serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 38.8.13).

Because of the scriptural mandate to number, name, and nourish all in Christ’s Church (see Moroni 6:4–5), those with some callings will be able to access data that a member has selected for limited visibility. Those with access include stake and ward organization presidencies and those who have been delegated responsibility to minister and be ministered to.

To review your digital contact information visibility settings and update them according to your preferences, access your member profile in Member Tools or visit account.ChurchofJesusChrist.org.

Common Questions

Who has access to my digital contact information for each visibility setting option?

The visibility settings options and those who can view your digital contact information based on each setting are as follows:

  • Stake Members: Visible to all members of your stake or district.
  • Ward Members: Visible to all members of your ward or branch.
  • Stake and Ward Organization Presidencies: Visible to stake or district and ward or branch council members and their presidencies, as well as ministering brothers and sisters (both those you’re assigned to and those assigned to you).

Separate from the above visibility settings, your name and the names of your adult household members are visible to all members in your stake or district (unless your membership record is in a protected status). The names of non-adult household members are only visible to all members in your ward or branch.

As one of the heads of my household, can I update the visibility settings for my children?

The names and digital contact information of non-adult household members are only visible to all members in your ward or branch. You can update the visibility settings for non-adult household members by going to their profile in Member Tools or by visiting account.ChurchofJesusChrist.org.

I am a ministering brother or sister. Can I see the digital contact information of those I minister to if their visibility is set to Stake and Ward Organization Presidencies?

Yes, ministering brothers and sisters can see digital contact information of those they minister to or who minister to them, even when their contact information is set to Stake and Ward Organization Presidencies.

Which ward or branch leaders can update my digital contact information?

As a member, you can update your own digital contact information using Member Tools or by visiting account.ChurchofJesusChrist.org. If help is needed, the following leaders can update your digital contact information on your behalf using LCR or Member Tools: stake or district presidency, bishopric or branch presidency, ward or branch executive secretary, ward or branch clerk, ward or branch assistant clerk, ward or branch assistant clerk–membership.

I am a new member of the Church. What are the default visibility settings for my digital contact information?

The visibility settings for digital contact information of new members are set to “Stake Members” by default.

My adult child lives in my home. Can I see and update their visibility settings?

No, the adult child must update their own visibility settings unless their membership record is marked as “Not Accountable” by the bishop or branch president in LCR.

Some of my digital contact or membership information is wrong. How can I correct it?

To update incorrect personal or membership data, contact your ward or branch clerk or assistant ward or branch clerk–membership.

How do I create a Church Account so I can sign in to Member Tools and update my visibility settings?

To create a Church Account, visit account.ChurchofJesusChrist.org/register.

I don’t have a Church Account and don’t plan to get one. How do I update my visibility settings?

Leaders in your ward or branch serving in the following callings can update your visibility settings using Member Tools if you request them to: bishop or branch president, ward or branch clerk, ward or branch assistant clerk, ward or branch assistant clerk–membership.
