Finding and studying the names of Jesus Christ will help us draw closer to Him and recognize the ways He can bless our lives.

The psalmist calls us to “give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name” (Psalm 29:2).

President Russell M. Nelson has also invited us to “study everything Jesus Christ is by prayerfully and vigorously seeking to understand what each of His various titles and names means personally for you. For example, He really is your Advocate with the Father.”1 By personal experience, I can testify that our relationship with Jesus Christ will grow as we discover His names and prayerfully study what those names and titles mean to us.

One way we can better understand the many roles Jesus Christ fulfills is by identifying the many names and titles He holds, as listed in the holy scriptures. Each name and title indicates His majesty, might, power, and dominion. His names also demonstrate His tenderness, mercy, and grace. Jesus Christ is our source of strength, protection, life, and solace.

Elder Jonathan S. Schmitt of the Seventy spoke of the blessing it is for us to know the names and titles of Christ: “Knowing His many names also inspires us to become more like Him—to develop Christlike attributes that bring joy and purpose to our lives.”2

My effort to seek out the names of Jesus Christ has increased my testimony of the power of scripture study. I quickly realized that if I was not mindfully looking for His many names and titles, I would not see them. I understand better now that when we seek, we shall find. God reveals answers through the scriptures when we approach His word with questions asked in faith.

There are many names and titles given to Jesus Christ in the scriptures. I have personally discovered over 500 of them. As I’ve read, I have categorized those titles and names by the speaker, such as stated by a member of the Godhead, angels, disciples, etc. But each of us will find different ways of studying or recording these names that will inspire us and help us to organize what we’re learning. Also, while my list so far only includes names found in the scriptures, a similar list could be created with names taught by latter-day Church leaders.

Below, I share 115 names spoken by members of the Godhead. I hope this list inspires the breadth of titles that can be found in our reading. You may notice similar names or titles appearing more than once. I have done this intentionally. When the resurrected Lord appeared to Mary at the tomb, He told her, “I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God” (John 20:17). Jesus Christ’s use of “my Father” and “my God” as distinct from “your Father” and “your God” may indicate His special relationship with His Father and perhaps the personal, sacred relationship we can build with our Father in Heaven. For this reason, I have chosen to list titles such as “the Lord your God” and “my Redeemer” separate from “Lord God” and “Redeemer.”

In this article, I could have listed the 500+ names I’ve found, but I invite you instead to follow the encouragement of President Nelson to find and study the titles and names of Jesus Christ yourself.
