Called to Serve

Elder Henry B. Eyring was called as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve during general conference on April 1, 1995.

Elder Eyring, a native of Princeton, New Jersey, was called as First Counselor in the Presiding Bishopric in April 1985, a position he held until he was called as a member of the First Quorum of Seventy in 1992. Elder Eyring had also been serving as Commissioner of Church Education since September of 1992. Elder Eyring previously served as Commissioner of Church Education from September 1980 to April 1985.

Elder Eyring was born May 31, 1933. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Utah and earned his master’s and doctorate degrees from Harvard University. Elder Eyring has been an educator all of his adult life, having served as president of Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, from 1972 to 1977. Prior to his appointment at Ricks, he taught at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business from 1962 to 1971.

He and his wife, Kathleen, are the parents of four sons and two daughters.

New Seventies Quorum Members

During April conference, four new members were sustained to the First Quorum of the Seventy, and one new member was sustained to the Second Quorum of the Seventy.

Elder David E. Sorensen, 61, who has served in the Second Quorum of the Seventy since June 1992, was called as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy. He has been serving as president of the Asia North Area. Prior to his call as a General Authority, Elder Sorensen served as president of the Canada Halifax Mission. Elder Sorensen worked as a businessman before he received his call. He and his wife, Verla Anderson Sorensen, are the parents of seven children.

Elder John B. Dickson, 51, was named a member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy in June of 1992. He is now serving in the First Quorum of the Seventy as a counselor in the South America South Area Presidency. Prior to his calling as a General Authority Elder Dickson served as president of the Mexico City Mexico North Mission. Elder Dickson had a career as a businessman in the timber industry. He and his wife, Delores Jones Dickson, are the parents of eight children.

Elder Jay E. Jensen, 53, has been serving as a member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy since June of 1992. He is now a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy and is serving as the president of the South America North Area. Before becoming a General Authority, he served as a mission president in Colombia. He spent his professional life working in the Church Educational System and as director for scripture coordination for the Church. He and his wife, Lonna Lee Child Jensen, are the parents of six children.

Elder W. Craig Zwick, 47, was called to the First Quorum of the Seventy. Before his call as a General Authority, he served as a mission president in Chile and as a high councilor in his stake. Elder Zwick worked as a businessman in the construction industry and as executive director of the Utah State Department of Transportation before he received his call. He and his wife, Janet Johnson Zwick, have four children.

Elder Bruce D. Porter, 42, was called to the Second Quorum of the Seventy. Prior to his call as a Seventy, he served as a bishop, branch president, and stake mission president. Elder Porter was also an associate professor at BYU in the Political Science Department. He and his wife, Susan Elizabeth Holland Porter, have four children.
