Introduction to Skill Trainings

The skills in this resource can help learners better study the word of God, understand the scriptures, learn by the Spirit, apply gospel teachings to their lives, and share gospel truths with others in Christlike ways. Each skill training is designed to take between 10 and 20 minutes.

The skill trainings use the following pattern:

  1. Define. Help learners understand the skill they will practice. This could take about 2–5 minutes.

  2. Model. Demonstrate the skill. This could take about 3–5 minutes.

  3. Practice. Give learners the opportunity to practice the skill. Ensure that at least half the time (5–10 minutes) for the training is devoted to practice.

  4. Invite and Follow Up. Encourage learners to use the skill in their personal study. Follow up on their experiences and assess if further practice would help.

The skill trainings are designed to help seminary, institute, and Church teachers and students become more self-reliant scripture studiers. The trainings can be used in scripture courses and in other courses or workshops that focus on studying the scriptures. They can also be used by teachers at church or by parents in the home. Teachers can assess the needs of those they teach and choose with those they teach which trainings to focus on and when.
