How can I talk with my family or leaders about SSA?

Your same-sex attraction and feelings were once new and perhaps confusing to you. In the same way, when you talk to others about experiencing same-sex attraction, they will have to process this new information. They may have never talked about same-sex attraction before or experienced those feelings themselves. Just like you, they’ll be learning as you go through this experience together. So be patient.

You can practice with yourself by imagining what you might say to someone to express your feelings. When you share your feelings, remember to give your parents or leaders space to share their feelings, too. Word towards trying to understand each other. Together you can build trust and love through this process.

The Church has provided several resources to help members better understand same-sex attraction from a gospel perspective. If someone is struggling to understand and be supportive, direct them to these resources. They can be found in the Life Help and Self-Reliance sections of ChurchofJesusChrist.org.

Treat your parents, leaders, and others with the same kindness and respect that you hope they will show you. If you both approach this opportunity with a spirit of love and understanding, there is a better chance that it will turn out to be a good experience.
