Nehemiah 11–12

The Dedication of the Wall

Nehemiah 11 gives the names of the leaders of the people in Israel and which of them were assigned to live in Jerusalem. Chapter 11 also mentions others who were assigned to live in other cities in the land.

The first section of Nehemiah 12 contains the names of the priests and Levites (priesthood holders) who returned to Jerusalem in Zerubbabel’s group (vv. 1–9). The next section contains the names of the priests and Levites at the time of Nehemiah, who were descendants of the original group (vv. 10–26). The rest of the chapter tells about the dedication of the walls of Jerusalem (vv. 27–47).
