One of the purposes of doctrinal mastery is to help you locate and mark the scripture references and key scripture phrases of the doctrinal mastery scripture passages. This lesson will give you opportunities to locate and mark 13 doctrinal mastery scripture passages found in the second half of the New Testament.

Marking doctrinal mastery passages. Marking doctrinal mastery scripture passages will help students more easily remember and locate these passages. Invite students to consider marking the scripture passages in a way that is unique from the other markings in their scriptures. Students using the Gospel Library app could also create a tag for these passages.

Possible Learning Activities

A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this review lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by the area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught while seminary is in session.

Scripture references and key scripture phrases

Imagine that your friend happens to see you studying and marking your scriptures. After seeing a page with many markings on it, he asks you why you make markings in your scriptures.

  • How would you respond to your friend?

Consider providing an opportunity for students to share some different ways they mark their scriptures and why they mark their scriptures like they do. Remind students that there is not a right or wrong way to mark scriptures.

Marking or underlining scriptures is an effective way to distinguish certain scripture passages from others, and it enables you to more easily locate those scripture passages in the future. Display the following three instructions for students to follow. Invite students to move around the classroom and work with partners to locate and, if they so choose, to mark the 13 doctrinal mastery scripture passages and key scripture phrases from the previous chart. Have students switch partners every couple of minutes.

For the first question, consider providing a few questions for students to choose from, such as “What type of songs do you listen to?” and “What sports do you enjoy playing?”

  1. Ask a question to get to know each other better.

  2. Help each other locate the doctrinal mastery scripture passage and, if applicable, the key scripture phrase. Consider marking the passage in your scriptures.

  3. Share why you think the truth in the key scripture phrase is important.

When students finish, encourage them to begin memorizing these references and key scripture phrases.

Supplemental Learning Activity

An alternate activity

  • Why do you think your body is like a temple?

1 Corinthians 11:11 Locate 1 Corinthians 11:11. Consider marking the key scripture phrase “Neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.” Be sure to mark this key scripture phrase in your scriptures.
