Doctrinal Mastery: Assessment Review 2

Doctrinal Mastery: Assessment Review 2

1 Corinthians 6:19–20 through Revelation 20:12

This doctrinal mastery assessment review is designed as a learning experience to help students review the 13 doctrinal mastery passages found from 1 Corinthians through Revelation. It will also help prepare students for the upcoming assessment (“Doctrinal Mastery: Assessment 2”) and allow them to demonstrate understanding and application of these passages.

This review lesson is intended to be used as an in-person or videoconference learning experience.

Use this review and administer the doctrinal mastery assessment anytime after all doctrinal mastery passages from 1 Corinthians through Revelation have been taught. It may be necessary to teach some of the doctrinal mastery lessons before they come up in the sequence of the scriptures so the assessment can be administered before the end of the semester.

Possible Learning Activities

Doctrinal mastery in your life

Consider the needs of students, and select the portions of this review that will best help them prepare for “Doctrinal Mastery: Assessment 2.” Invite students throughout this review to note the passages that they do not know as well and to make plans to study and review these passages in preparation for the assessment.

Ask students to reflect on the following questions.

  • How have you been blessed by studying the doctrinal mastery passages from 1 Corinthians through Revelation?

  • When have you been able to use what you have learned from these passages in your life?

The following quizzes in review activities 1 and 2 are meant to help students review the doctrinal mastery references and key scripture phrases. Different activities could also be used to help review references and scripture phrases according to students’ needs.

Review activity 1: Know the scripture references and key scripture phrases

Display the following quiz, or provide copies of it to students.

As an alternative to displaying the quiz or providing copies of it to students, write each reference on separate, small pieces of paper, and place them in a bowl. Then write each key phrase on separate, small pieces of paper, and place those in another bowl. Invite a student to randomly choose one paper from either bowl and to read it to the class. Ask class members if they know what the matching reference or key phrase is. Then invite a different student to randomly choose a paper out of the other bowl. To add anticipation, consider telling students that if they are lucky enough to choose the corresponding reference or key phrase, they will receive a small treat. If they do not draw a match, ask the class what the matching reference or key phrase is. Continue this process with different students choosing a piece of paper from either bowl until there are no pieces of paper left in either bowl.

Answer key: 1-d, 2-g, 3-c, 4-h, 5-e, 6-k, 7-j, 8-a, 9-f, 10-b, 11-i, 12-m, 13-l

Review activity 2: Know the scripture references and key scripture phrases

Display the following quiz, or provide copies of it to students.

As an alternate to displaying the quiz or providing copies of it to students, assign each student a different doctrinal mastery passage. Inform them that their goal is to use the fewest words possible as hints to help the class identify the corresponding scripture reference. Invite a student to stand and share a new word from their key scripture phrase every five seconds until the class correctly identifies the reference. Then invite the class to recite the key scripture phrase in unison before the next student stands up to share key words from their assigned passage. It may help students to review all 13 key scripture phrases in this way rather than only the following suggested passages.

Answer key: (1)  body; temple; Holy Ghost; (2)  foundation; apostles; Jesus Christ; (3)  come; falling; first; (4)  wisdom; ask; God; (5)  gospel; preached; dead

Fill in the blank with the missing word or words from the key scripture phrases.

  1. “Your is the of the ” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).

  2. The Church is “built upon the of the and prophets, himself being the chief corner stone” (Ephesians 2:19–20).

  3. “The day of Christ … shall not , except there come a away ” (2 Thessalonians 2:1–3).

  4. “If any of you lack , let him of ” (James 1:5–6).

  5. “The [was] also to them that are ” (1 Peter 4:6).

Review activity 3: Apply the doctrine

The following activity will help students demonstrate understanding of doctrinal mastery passages by allowing them to explain how the passages could be applied in real-life situations. Allow students to use their scriptures to help them choose one or more doctrinal mastery passages that they feel could help the person described in the activity. Invite them to explain how the passage they chose could help the person. Multiple doctrinal mastery passages could be applied to each scenario.

This activity could be done individually, in groups, as a class, or using a combination of all three. Students could also create their own realistic scenarios for the doctrinal mastery passages.

  1. Your friend’s loved one recently passed away. Your friend has many questions about what happens to us after death.

  2. Your brother seems to be struggling and is questioning if God is really aware of him.

  3. A Church leader asks you to give advice to your peers in an upcoming Sunday School lesson on how they can stay faithful when faced with false ideas and temptations.

Review activity 4: Use the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge

Consider using the following scenario to help students review the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge. It may be effective for students to do this activity in pairs or small groups.

You have a friend who is about to graduate from high school and is nervous about the important decisions she will be making in her life over the next few years.

Teach your friend about the following three principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge and how she could use them to access Heavenly Father’s help with her concerns:

  • Act in faith.

  • Examine concepts and questions with an eternal perspective.

  • Seek further understanding through divinely appointed sources.

  • Which doctrinal mastery passages from this half of the course might help your friend? How could these passages help her?

  • How is it helpful to use the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge when we are seeking answers to our questions or concerns?

  • How have you used these principles to help others or to resolve your own concerns?

Review activity 5: Passages with special meaning in your life

Invite students to reflect on which doctrinal mastery passage has impacted them the most and helped increase their understanding of or love for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Explain that they will have the opportunity to share the passage they chose as part of the assessment.

Consider distributing the following handout to students to help them prepare for the assessment (“Doctrinal Mastery: Assessment 2”).
