Changing Lives Through Service
“As God’s children we desire to be true disciples of Jesus Christ. Each of us would like to reach out in Christlike service … but we may not know how to start or where to go. JustServe is designed as a resource to help.” (First Presidency Message, JustServe Community Guidebook)
What Is JustServe?
JustServe is a Church-sponsored resource that helps organizations find volunteers to meet community needs and helps volunteers more easily find service projects to help their community. Registration and use of the JustServe website and app are free of charge to nonprofit, faith-based, community, and governmental organizations. JustServe is a resource that magnifies our ability to live the second great commandment to love our neighbors.
How It Works
JustServe has become a movement with over 165,000 projects posted and hundreds of thousands of volunteers serving. It is not only helping alleviate the burden of finding volunteers but saving organizations time and resources.
Organizations
Organizations doing good in their communities list volunteer needs on JustServe.org and connect with people willing to help.
Specialists
Our army of volunteer specialists help organizations in their communities post projects on JustServe to find willing volunteers.
Volunteers
Volunteers can quickly find and get involved with projects in their area that meet their interests and fit into their schedules.
Principles
The app and website make it easy for volunteers to:
-
Find opportunities to help those in need.
-
Enhance the quality of life in the community.
-
Develop mutual understanding and make new friends.
A Gift to the Community
JustServe is a gift to the community. The JustServe app and website are used by organizations to post service opportunities and publicize their needs. Volunteers can search for service opportunities that meet their interests, skills, and availability.
JustServe reduces the time needed for volunteers to find meaningful service opportunities, leaving them with more time to give to service.
JustServe Supports All Divinely Appointed Responsibilities of the Work of Salvation and Exaltation
JustServe blesses the community, including Church members. It is both outward oriented and supportive of the work of salvation and exaltation in each of the four divinely appointed responsibilities:
-
Living the gospel of Jesus Christ. In response to the question from the lawyer who asked, “And who is my neighbour?” (Luke 10:29), Jesus taught the parable of the good Samaritan, which illustrates for each of us that our neighbor is anyone in need, even the stranger (see Luke 10:25–37). “As members and friends of the Church reach out in an effort to minister to people in need, we create a spirit of love and cooperation that transcends differences and connects us as children of God” (First Presidency Message, Community Service Guidebook).
-
Caring for those in need. In the Book of Mormon, King Benjamin taught his people that faithful disciples of Jesus Christ would “succor those that stand in need of … succor” and “administer of [their] substance unto him that standeth in need” (Mosiah 4:16). When we “are in the service of [our] fellow beings [we] are only in the service of [our] God” (Mosiah 2:17).
In the parable of the good Samaritan, the Savior helps us to understand that our neighbor not only includes our friends but all in the community. Service is pure religion in action. “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world” (James 1:27).
-
Inviting all to receive the gospel. The purpose of JustServe is not to proselyte but to let our light shine and to build bridges of friendship within the community through Christlike service. Missionaries and Church members are among the volunteers who serve for the sole purpose and pure desire to help others in need, regardless of their beliefs. They can answer questions about their faith but do not proselyte. Missionaries get to know the communities they serve and have improved emotional health as they feel joy in serving.
Those serving together and the recipients of the service come to understand each other and are blessed as they engage in service in the community.
-
Uniting families for eternity. Families can find service opportunities that are appropriate for the ages of all family members. Families are strengthened as they serve together. Youth and young adults are also blessed through service. JustServe can help organize projects for youth groups, FSY, or YSA conferences.
JustServe also impacts the gathering on the other side of the veil, as some service projects may include family history, indexing, documenting graves, and projects with historical societies.
Guidelines
Organizing JustServe
Charity and service are not programs but doctrine and commandments. JustServe was created to simplify our ability to follow the Savior in this important way. To implement JustServe, please see the Community Service Guidebook on how to organize it in the area, coordinating councils, stakes, and wards.
To start JustServe, the Area Presidency, with approval from the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, makes the request through the Welfare and Self-Reliance Department. As JustServe becomes established in an area, faith-based, nonprofit, community, and government organizations will be invited and authorized to post their own volunteer needs. They can then share JustServe as a resource for their audiences. Everyone is welcome to use the website to find and submit volunteer opportunities.
JustServe Guidelines
-
The best service opportunities are collaborative—working side by side with others in faith-based, nonprofit, community, and government organizations.
-
Community service opportunities should assist those in need or enhance the quality of life in the community.
-
JustServe projects should not have a political or advocacy focus, be for-profit oriented, or directly involve volunteers in soliciting or handling money or participating in other prohibited activities (see JustServe.org/about).
Building Bridges
Service is a powerful way to build unity and cooperation with neighbors in natural ways. It opens doors and builds relationships with community leaders. As we jointly seek to relieve suffering and shine the light of Jesus Christ, bridges of understanding are built and the love of God is extended into the community, blessing all.
