“Overview for Pornography Users,” Help for Me
We live in complicated times filled with all kinds of trials and temptations. Pornography use is a challenge for many of us, but there is hope in the gospel and in the knowledge that we can find answers. God is with us, and help is available from resources, professionals, and those who are close to us. We don’t have to face our challenges alone.
President Russell M. Nelson taught that “our Heavenly Father never intended [for us to] deal with the maze of personal problems and social issues on our own” (“Drawing the Power of Jesus Christ into Our Lives,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2017, 39). Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ will help us when we turn to them.
Overcoming pornography use often includes dealing with various biological, psychological, social, and spiritual factors. As we learn more about these factors, we can start to understand and address them.
This book focuses on five principles of change that have guided others in navigating a path away from pornography. As we live these principles, turn to Christ, and learn about the various factors that may be affecting us, we can find hope and guidance. These principles include:
We are children of a loving Heavenly Father. Through the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ, we can be redeemed from our sins. As we turn to our Heavenly Father in prayer and rely on Jesus Christ and His Atonement, we can receive the strength to change.
Being honest with ourselves and others about our problems and turning to Christ with humility are important steps in our journey. As we aim to be more honest and humble, we can begin to identify the aspects of our life that need attention.
Connecting with others and with our Savior can help us change. Additionally, seeking to repair relationships that have been harmed by our pornography use can bring healing.
As we make and adjust plans, set goals, and seek personal insight, the Holy Ghost can help us determine how to improve our lives and confront this challenge. We can change and become more like our Savior.
Being accountable to God and others helps us progress. As we identify areas that need work and seek help, we can begin the process of change. Taking responsibility for ourselves helps us invite the Lord’s help into our lives.
We are each unique, with different challenges that have led us to use pornography. Because of that individuality, we will each have different paths forward.
Studying the resources on this site can help us find answers to common questions and guidance for our next steps. As we do our part to make changes, we can receive help from Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Overcoming pornography use can be a long and difficult process, “but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).
