Reflecting on and assessing your spiritual learning can help you draw closer to the Savior and strengthen your conversion. This lesson is intended to help you evaluate the progress and growth you have experienced during your study of the Book of Mormon this year.

Invite students to record their feelings and impressions. Remind students that the Holy Ghost can teach them things during class that are not spoken aloud. As students record these spiritual impressions, they increase their ability to recognize and learn by the Spirit. This can allow the Lord to continue guiding their lives.

Student preparation: Students could reflect on their study of the Book of Mormon and prepare to share an insight or truth they learned that has increased their love for Jesus Christ.

Possible Learning Activities

In this lesson, students will have opportunities to reflect on how the Book of Mormon has helped them develop faith in Jesus Christ and become more converted to Him. If it would be helpful to focus on specific truths students have studied in the Book of Mormon, you could adapt the activities to include those truths. Students can complete the activities in any order.

How do you feel about the Book of Mormon?

This portion of the lesson is intended to help students think about how their study of the Book of Mormon this year has influenced their feelings about and testimony of Jesus Christ and His gospel. You may want to use the following questions to begin a discussion with your students.

President Russell M. Nelson invited us to think about three questions related to the Book of Mormon:

You may want to display the three questions in the following statement on the board.

First, what would your life be like without the Book of Mormon? Second, what would you not know? And third, what would you not have? (Russell M. Nelson, “The Book of Mormon: What Would Your Life Be Like without It?,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2017, 61)

Invite students to discuss the three questions in President Nelson’s statement. Depending on your students, you may want to give them time to discuss them in small groups before doing so as a class. As students respond, listen carefully, and ask follow-up questions to help them articulate their thoughts more clearly and deeply.

What do you understand about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ?

The following section can help students explain various teachings about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

President Russell M. Nelson described one of the key roles of the Book of Mormon:

Something powerful happens when a child of God seeks to know more about Him and His Beloved Son. Nowhere are those truths taught more clearly and powerfully than in the Book of Mormon. (Russell M. Nelson, “The Book of Mormon: What Would Your Life Be Like without It?,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2017, 61)

Take a moment to reflect on what you have learned about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ as you have studied the Book of Mormon this year. You could review your scriptures and study journal for truths about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ that you may have marked or made notes about through the year. List three or four truths that were especially meaningful to you in your study journal.

After reviewing their study journals or scriptures, students could list meaningful truths on the board. Students might also include thoughts from their class preparation.

To prompt students’ memories or assist students who have difficulty reading, consider showing one of the Book of Mormon videos included in “Supplemental Learning Activities.”

Find at least one scripture passage that supports each truth you listed in your study journal. Write the scripture reference next to each truth, and explain how you could use the scripture passage to teach that truth.

If students need help finding passages in the Book of Mormon that teach truths about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, you might share some of the following with them. Be alert and ready to help students who may need additional assistance.

Take time for students to share the Book of Mormon teachings they chose in class. Students could share with the entire class, or they could be divided into smaller groups.

How has the Book of Mormon influenced the way you live your life?

The following section can help students reflect on and express how they are striving to live the doctrine and teachings of the Book of Mormon.

Read the following statement by the Prophet Joseph Smith (1805–44), looking for what he taught about the power of the Book of Mormon:

Note: Students could locate and read the following statement in the sixth paragraph of the introduction to the Book of Mormon.

I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book. (Book of Mormon introduction; see also History of the Church, 4:461)

To “abide by its precepts” means to live the principles and teachings contained in the Book of Mormon. Reflect for a few moments on how your thoughts, attitudes, or actions have been influenced because of what you have learned from the Book of Mormon.

Give students time to respond to one of the following questions in their study journals. Encourage them to be thoughtful and to invite the Holy Ghost to help them see how their lives have been affected by the teachings of the Book of Mormon.

  • How has your study of the Book of Mormon helped you feel closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ?

  • What are some specific teachings you have been able to apply from your study of the Book of Mormon?

  • What blessings have you experienced as you have regularly studied the Book of Mormon?

Invite students to share their responses. As time permits, share your testimony about the Book of Mormon and the meaningful teachings that have influenced your life.
