Memorize

This lesson will give you an opportunity to memorize doctrinal mastery references and their key scripture phrases and even memorize entire passages.

Helping students understand the importance of memorization. Seek opportunities to motivate students to memorize scripture. Help them see how memorizing scripture can strengthen them against temptation and strengthen their relationship with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

Student preparation: Invite students to review the final 12 Book of Mormon doctrinal mastery passages and select one (or a few key scripture phrases) that they feel would be helpful for them to memorize. Ask them to come prepared to share circumstances in which memorizing this passage (or these phrases) might help them and why.

Possible Learning Activities

A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this review lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by the area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught while seminary is in session.

We can follow the Savior’s example by memorizing scriptures

The following is intended to help students follow Jesus Christ’s example and find motivation to memorize scriptures. You could show a picture of the Savior while discussing His example.

  • What are some ways we can follow the example of Jesus Christ?

One way we can follow the example of Jesus Christ is by memorizing scriptures. The Savior used memorized scriptures to overcome temptation (see Matthew 4:1–11) and to teach others (see Luke 24:27; 3 Nephi 22).

  • What are some situations in which having scriptures memorized would be helpful?

As you memorize doctrinal mastery scripture passages or key scripture phrases, remember that you are following the example of Jesus Christ.

Consider dividing students into small groups and inviting them to choose one doctrinal mastery passage from the chart that they would like to memorize. Encourage each group to quietly study the chosen passage for a few minutes. Students could work with their group to memorize the passage using the phrase-by-phrase activity described below, other methods they may have practiced previously, or the memorization features in the Doctrinal Mastery app.

Another option is to give each group a blank piece of paper. One student begins by writing the scripture reference on the paper. Then that student passes it to the next student, who writes the first word of the passage. The paper is passed around, with each student writing one word until the entire passage is complete. Another option is to give each student 10 seconds to write as much as possible before passing the paper to the next student. The groups could do this multiple times, trying to complete it faster each time.

Review

Rather than having students write a note to you, consider having them write a letter to their present or future selves. Another option is to have them discuss the following questions in pairs or small groups.

Write a brief note to your teacher. Include the following:

  • The scripture passage or key scripture phrases you worked on memorizing and which memorization methods you used

  • Circumstances you are facing now or will face in the future in which having this passage or key phrases memorized would be helpful

  • Your thoughts on how memorizing scriptures can help you follow the example of Jesus Christ

Look for opportunities to repeat the memorized scripture reference and passage (or key phrases) often.
