Learning to apply the Lord’s words in the holy scriptures can bless you in many ways. This lesson can help you apply truths in doctrinal mastery passages from the second half of the Book of Mormon.

Practicing applying doctrinal mastery passages. Provide various opportunities for students to explain and apply what they have learned from doctrinal mastery passages. Help students discover personal relevance in the scripture passages and encourage them to live the principles taught.

Student preparation: Consider inviting students to select one or two doctrinal mastery passages and work on memorizing the scripture reference and key scripture phrase.

Possible Learning Activities

A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this review lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by the area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught while seminary is in session.

Momentum

Image

To begin class, think about inviting a student to roll a ball or toy car in front of the class. Consider creating a slope the ball could roll down to illustrate increased momentum.

Imagine you pushed or kicked a ball. What could influence how far or how fast the ball rolls?

Momentum is one way to describe the strength or force of a moving object. For example, a bicycle is put into motion as the rider pushes off the ground, and it keeps momentum as the rider maintains balance and continues pedaling. The bicycle gains momentum as the rider increases their effort in pedaling or if the road has a downward incline.

  • What are some other examples of positive momentum?

You may want to display the following statement. It could be helpful to mark important words and phrases as students discuss the following questions.

President Russell M. Nelson taught:

We have never needed positive spiritual momentum more than we do now, to counteract the speed with which evil and the darker signs of the times are intensifying. Positive spiritual momentum will keep us moving forward amid the fear and uncertainty created by pandemics, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and armed hostilities. Spiritual momentum can help us withstand the relentless, wicked attacks of the adversary and thwart his efforts to erode our personal spiritual foundation. (Russell M. Nelson, “The Power of Spiritual Momentum,” Liahona, May 2022, 98)

  • How would you describe what spiritual momentum is and why we need it?

It might be helpful for students to record their thoughts about the following self-assessment questions. As prompted by the Spirit, consider inviting students to share their insights.

  • In what areas of your life do you think you need more spiritual momentum? What benefits would you anticipate receiving?

Increasing spiritual momentum

Doctrinal mastery scripture passages teach true doctrine that helps us learn about Jesus Christ and His gospel. As we follow Him in faith, we can create and increase spiritual momentum in our lives.

Give students ample time to complete the following activity. You may want to allow students with learning needs to work with a partner. Consider making copies of the provided handout for students to use during the activity.

If you choose not to use the handout, you may want to draw the following image on the board.

Gaining Spiritual Momentum through Doctrinal Mastery

Book of Mormon Teacher Manual (2024)—“Doctrinal Mastery Review 19: Apply Doctrinal Mastery Passages”

Image

Imagine that you are the bicyclist, and the pathway represents your life. You might notice how the first part of your path is straight, but then you encounter obstacles and inclines that require greater effort to overcome. Think about the spiritual momentum you need to successfully move through life and the obstacles and challenges that you may experience.

Study the doctrinal mastery key scripture phrases you have been learning, looking for passages that relate to your personal journey. Next to the corresponding numbers on your drawing, write the reference to a doctrinal mastery passage that has or could help you:

  1. Maintain spiritual momentum and progress on a daily basis.

  2. Avoid or overcome an obstacle as you believe and act on the truth the passage teaches.

  3. Draw upon the Savior’s power and rise to achieve your spiritual goals.

For each doctrinal mastery passage you selected and included on your drawing, record your thoughts about at least one of the following ideas:

  • An experience when you felt the truth and importance of the doctrinal mastery passage.

  • How you could better apply the doctrine or principle of the passage in your life.

  • Why you feel this passage will bless you with the Savior’s power and increase your spiritual momentum.

  • How the doctrine has increased your love for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

To help students have confidence to work on their own, consider giving them an example by writing a scripture reference next to an appropriate number and discussing with students how the scripture passage could apply in that area.

Consider displaying or providing students with the following chart as a resource as they continue to study this lesson.
